There will be no happily-ever-after for a skeletal dog who was abandoned in Lafayette County, Arkansas. The emaciated dog, dubbed Charlie, was discovered by a good Samaritan who was horrified at his dismal condition.
Charlie was taken in at Columbia County Animal Protection Society (CCAPS), where staff worked to help him overcome his emaciated condition. On October 10, shortly after Charlie’s intake, the shelter manager described his pitiful condition:
He wouldn’t have survived a day or two longer if he weren’t saved. He could only take a couple steps before falling down, he has “Zero” muscle, missing at least half of his hair/mange, sores scattered across his body, infection in his eyes and the rest of his body for that matter! He is in such bad shape that we can’t begin to guess what breed he is. When I got to him he hung his head like he was ashamed or had misbehaved.
Staff had high hopes that Charlie’s round-the-clock veterinary care would be enough to undo the horrible lack of care he had miraculously survived, but the perfect ending everyone had hoped for was not meant to be. On Tuesday, the shelter informed Facebook followers that Charlie was gone, writing:
Our hearts have broken, our Sweet Charlie was no longer able to fight and passed away over night. We are comforted knowing Charlie felt loved and cared for in the short time he was with us!
