In Opelousas, Louisiana, our collective hearts broke on Sunday afternoon as Nellie became another forgotten pet. At the St. Landry Animal Rescue, their Facebook page entry described Nellie’s profound sadness.

“When Nellie’s people left, she whimpered, she cried, she begged… yet Nellie was still left… All Nellie wanted to do, WAS SEE THEM. Sadly, what she saw was them pull out the driveway and go.”

Since Nellie’s photo appeared on social media, her story has been shared more than 1,300 times; no one has yet to come forward. Sharing saves lives.

Perhaps the devastating photo of Nellie trying to follow her human walking brings more awareness to the plight of the homeless and abandoned.

“Don’t ever think PETS DO NOT FEEL. Don’t ever think they don’t understand,” the heartbreaking post continued. As people we understand what it’s like to be FORGOTTEN. PETS DO TOO.

AND I PROMISE YOU, THEY DO NOT FORGET YOU… To the forgotten souls that dwell in shelters, I WISH I KNEW THE CURE…”

At the very least, spay and neuter your pets. We don’t need anymore sadness in shelters. Nellie is just one example of the approximately 6.5 million companion animals entering animal shelters in the United States every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 millions are cats. They all deserve better.

  1. We ALWAYS fix & chip our furbabies (cats, dogs & horses)…… since we are not breeders and don’t want to add to pet overpopulation, it makes sense to us!!!

It’s absolutely heartbreaking how cruel some individuals are to companion animals…… I just don’t understand it…… companion animals ARE family members from date of adoption to date they go to Heaven…..

  2. If you can’t commit to a pet for their life then don’t get one. I am at a loss at how anyone with a heart can simply walk away from a pet they were supposed to love.
