Nearly 200 dogs were just rescued from the New Jersey home of what is described as a “prominent breeder.” As reported by NBC New York, the Monmouth County SPCA assisted with the rescue effort at an undisclosed location in Hunterdon County.

As reported by NBC, the dogs were at the home of a dog breeder whose dogs had won Best in Breed awards from the Westminster Kennel Club. The name of the owner has not been released. According to Monmouth County SPCA, the dogs were living in “squalor,” and appear to have had very little human contact.

The animal welfare agency wrote:

All of these dogs seem to have had limited human contact and minimal to no veterinary care – we will need your support to get them all vaccinated, de-wormed and microchipped along with any other additional medical care they’ll need in the future including spay/neuter surgeries. Some of the dogs are pregnant and have masses and infections so will most definitely need extra care.

The influx of dogs is a huge burden on the animal shelter. There are a variety of ways for individuals to help with this overwhelming situation:

Donate – the shelter is in need of monetary donations in order to provide vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter surgeries, food, shelter and general compassionate care to the dogs we are currently housing PLEASE considering donating towards these dogs. You can donate directly through Facebook OR checks can be mailed to:

Hunterdon Case

Shelter items: With the influx of dogs taken into the shelter, there is a need for blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, paper towels, cleaning supplies and dog food/treats. Donations can be dropped off at the Eatonton shelter or you can utilize the Amazon Wish List here: amzn.to/2Kdcy6P

Foster: The shelter is in need of foster homes for several of the dogs in its care. Dogs, especially in cases like this, have a much easier time adjusting to their new surroundings in a home environment rather than in a shelter. If you are able to foster a dog, please email [email protected]

Adopt: These dogs are not currently up for adoption and the shelter does not have information on when they will be. The dogs will need time to decompress, need to be medically cleared, spayed/neutered, and assessed behaviorally before they will be ready to meet potential adopters. With the amount of dogs, it may take 2-3 weeks before the dogs are available. PLEASE REMEMBER there are PLENTY of dogs and cats waiting patiently at the shelter already for their homes!

  1. it always “boggles” my mind that this happens at a “prominent” breeder but somehow they have gotten away with it for years. And why not name them? Doesn’t the public deserve to know who is doing such things?
