An emaciated puppy, covered in filth and near death, was rescued from a wire cage inside of a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, motel room this week. The nine-month-old German shepherd puppy was soaked in urine and covered in feces – officers who found her on Monday at the Suburban Lodge stated that she was “emaciated, diseased with infected open wounds and inoperable rear legs.”

The man believed to be responsible for the shepherd pup’s deplorable state of health is identified as Christopher Wesley Sauber; he is facing a charge for ill treatment of animals in general, torture, reports WMBF News.

The ailing puppy was transported to the Grand Strand Humane Society, which reached out to Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital. The pup is being stabilized, but it is unclear if she will ever be able to walk again.

Jess Wnuk, the director of community outreach and lifesaving for Grand Strand Humane Society, told the news agency:

“In my seven years of animal sheltering this is likely one of the worst, if not the worst case, I can ever remember,”
