Men rescue wolf from icy river

Three men, working on the dam on the Parnu river in Estonia, rescued what they believed was a drowning dog stuck in the ice. According to multiple sources, the men pulled the ‘dog’ from the icy river and warmed him up in a vehicle.

One of the rescuers, Rando Kartsepp, described the animal’s behavior after being pulled to safety:

“He was calm, slept on my legs. When I wanted to stretch them, he raised his head for a moment,”

But the ‘dog’s’ size and coloring were not exactly in line with what a dog would look like. After the animal was taken to a veterinarian for care, the truth came out – according to BBC News, a local hunter identified the ‘dog’ as a young wolf.

The wolf’s docile demeanor may have been caused by his low blood pressure after being pulled from the cold water. Staff at the veterinary clinic too steps to ensure that he did not turn on them and after he recuperated, he was released to the wild.

The Estonian Union for the Protection of Animals (EUPA), stated:

“We are so happy for the outcome of the story, and wish to thank all the participants – especially these men who rescued the wolf and the doctors of the clinic who were not afraid to treat and nurture the wild animal.”
