On Saturday afternoon, the mayor of Attleboro, Massachusetts, announced that his beloved dog Mura, who was terminally ill with hemangiosarcoma, had passed away. The 10-year-old dog became a darling of the media after her owner, Mayor Paul Heroux, announced that he had cancelled a scheduled trip overseas after learning that Mura had only a few months to live – opting instead to take his companion on an epic cross-country trek.

The pair embarked on a journey which covered 8,500 miles, with visits to 24 states and Canada. The pair hit the road on October 28 and visited landmarks including the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and Yellowstone National Park – along the way, there were plenty of photo opportunities which Heroux shared with his Facebook followers.

The same Facebook fans who fell in love with Mura through stories and photos, shed tears when Heroux announced her death. He wrote:

Mura Heroux (2/13/2008–3/9/2019)

My little girl passed away today at about 3PM. Mura was First Dog of Attleboro. She was not a service dog, she was a “Public Service” Dog. She made so many people happy. Everyone loves Mura.

Rest In Peace, Beautiful.

Yesterday: Laughing man jumped on pelican in the water – more here.

Oh my!
