Prison sentence for man involved in dog fighting

Man sentenced to large fine and prison in dog fighting case

A New Jersey man involved in an organized dog fighting operation has been sentence to a large fine and prison time. As reported by the Courier Post, U.S. District Court Judge Peter G. Sheridan sentenced 39-year-old Justin Love, of Sewell, to four-and-a-half years in prison and fined him $9,000 for his part in the dog fighting operation.

A jury found Love guilty of possessing and trafficking fighting dogs in addition to conspiracy to violate the animal fighting prohibitions of the federal Animal Welfare Act, six counts of possessing a dog intended for use in an animal fighting venture and two counts of purchasing and receiving a dog intended for use in an animal fighting venture.

Love was among several individuals arrested in 2016 in a federal crackdown on illegal dog fighting operations. Investigators found grim evidence of the deadly blood spot at Love’s residence. The U.S. Attorneys Office described the evidence at Love’s home:

“At Love’s residence, canine blood was found on the floor, walls and ceiling of the basement, and Love had tried to set up a “class” for dog fighters to practice administering I.V. fluids to injured dogs, using live dogs as their practice subjects.”

Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division stated:

Our justice system will not tolerate the torment and death of animals in the fighting ring, as the sentencings in this case demonstrate
