A man was sent to jail after witnesses contacted the authorities to report him beating a puppy in a parking lot. As reported by the Santa Clarita Valley Signal, the puppy’s alleged abuser, identified as 25-year-0ld Zachary Matthew Burnette, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and taken to the Pitchess Detention Center.

His pup, a nine-month-old mixed breed, was taken to the Castaic Animal Shelter where he remains until the case is settled in court. Don Barre, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, told the news agency, “The dog is not available for adoption at this time.”

Burnette was arrested after witnesses saw him hitting the pup in a parking lot near the Smart & Final Extra store and the Valencia Lanes bowling alley – the alleged abuse happened after the pup had an accident in his vehicle.

Burnette is due in court on April 23.
