In Woodbury, Minnesota, a man was charged with felony animal cruelty on Friday after authorities say he repeatedly kicked and punched his girlfriend’s dog out of jealousy. Nicholas D. Schmidt, 24, faces three counts of mistreating animals and torture.

According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, Schmidt had abused the three-year-old Labrador mix named Ziggy over the past two months. After the dog’s owner brought her pet to a veterinarian where she was told Ziggy was suffering from “severe injuries consistent with abuse,” the woman told authorities she had been dating Schmidt for three months, and he had been living in her apartment most of the time. During that time Schmidt complained about the time she spent with Ziggy and  allegedly admitted he was jealous.

On September 4,  Ziggy had been stuck under a fish tank; his head had been pushed through the metal hole in the stand and suffered intense pain in his back while bleeding from his nose and his leg. Schmidt took photos of the dog and sent them to the woman insisting someone had broken into the apartment and abused her dog. Subsequent abuse occurred again on October 1, when a video showed the dog lying in a pool of blood.

Ziggy suffered from bruises on his chest, abrasions and puncture wounds on his front legs, lacerations on his lip and tongue, a puncture on his chin and fractured teeth.

The woman ended the relationship over the phone and told Schmidt to vacate her apartment.

The dog’s medical bills have exceeded $10,000 and he is recuperating at home.

Schmidt’s bond has been set at $150,000 and he is not allowed to contact the woman.

  1. Good thing I wasn’t there. That POS monster would be in the morgue (& I would be headed to prison)……
I wouldn’t tolerate anyone harming a family member (including dogs, cats & horses)……

Keep this POS locked up forever!!! He will burn in Hell forever for his cruelty…….

I hope this furbaby heals ASAP. If I were that woman, I would move and change all my social contacts. I hope she really keeps this POS out of her life. First the dog suffers, then he goes after her…..

  2. My only question is how this went on as long as it did, after finding my dog hurt more than once, there would have been no excuse this POS could have provided that would have reassured me HE wasn’t doing this to my dog! She did the right thing kicking him to the curb, lets hope she chooses a better “boyfriend” the next time. Hope Ziggy has a swift and complete recovery from this abuse!
