A California man is hailing his pit bull a hero after the dog ran to his rescue and pulled a large shark off of his leg. The bizarre situation took place in Sonoma County’s Bodega Bay when James White was fishing from the shore.
White tells NBC Bay Area that he hooked into something exceptionally large – the next thing he knew, he was reeling in a six-foot sevengill shark. After bringing the shark to shore, White tried to take the hook out – it was then that the shark twisted and grabbed hold of his lower leg. He tells the news agency, “Immediately there was blood everywhere, the first bite punctured an artery. The pressure was intense.”
White was unable to get the shark to release his leg and he began screaming for help – it was his dog Darby who sprang into action. The devoted dog grabbed hold of the shark’s tail and began running up the hill, pulling the shark free. White was able to toss the shark back into the water and it swam away.
White is grateful for his dog’s help and credits Darby with saving him from injuries which could have been much, much worse.
