Man fatally mauled after scaling fence to access lion zoo enclosure

On Sunday, a man was fatally mauled by lions at a zoo in India. Bus loads of visitors at the Chhatbir Zoo, in Punjab, watched in horror as the man was dragged around the lions’ habitat – his “haunting” screams could be heard by stunned zoo visitors.

What happened?

According to multiple sources, the man scaled a large fence and then jumped into the area where the safari area where the lions were being held. It is unclear what prompted the man to jump into the lions’ habitat – he was spotted by zoo staff before he jumped and defied their orders to get down.

Punjab wildlife chief Dr Kuldeep Kumar recounted what happened to the Hindustan Times:

Lionesses have a very curious nature and [lioness] Shilpa saw something falling from a great height inside their territory. She rushed to take a look and found her prey. She instantly attacked the man, caught hold of his neck and then dragged him along,”

Stunned spectators attempted to distract the lions from mauling the man, but their efforts were futile. The man was still alive when he was retrieved from the enclosure, but he died at a hospital a short time later. His identity has not yet been determined.

I may be harsh, but anyone stupid enough to climb over a fence into a lion’s zoo enclosure, probably got about what they deserved. I hope the Lions will not be punished for his ignorance!
