A Lake Tahoe man lost his life in an icy California lake. As reported by WTKR News, 39-year-old David Schmidt drowned on Thanksgiving morning after taking his three dogs for a walk on Lake Baron, which was covered in thin ice.
Lake Valley Fire Capt. Perry Quinn tells the news agency, “When we got there, we made our way down the lake and we saw the two dogs in the water.” Adding, “They, potentially, could have been in the water for an hour or more, we’re not sure. They were still alive and paddling when we got there.”
While rescuing the dogs, a man’s clothing was spotted in the water – it was then that rescuers realized that a human might be involved. Schmidt’s body wasn’t found until the next day. The dogs that Schmidt tried to save all survived the icy incident.
Officials advise people to stay off of ice-covered lakes, especially in early winter, and recommend that people avoid venturing out alone in case an accident happens.
The dogs all received veterinary treatment and are expected to make a full recovery.
