A Florida man is facing a felony animal cruelty charge for intentionally running over ducklings who were in the road in a Largo mobile home park. As reported by Bay News 9, 56-year-old James Clairmont was arrested after witnesses told the police that he sped up to hit the ducklings who were playing in a puddle of water in the road on Sunday night.
Clairmont denies seeing the ducklings, and had no explanation to the police about how the blood and feathers got on his truck’s tires. Two ducklings perished at the scene and a third was taken to a veterinary hospital with broken bones. That duckling’s current condition is unknown.
Lily Simmons, who witnessed the sad incident, told the news agency:
“It was very upsetting. Especially, to the children because they just totally freaked out.”
She added:
“The truck did slow down for the people but then after he went over that speed bump he sped up and plowed right into the ducks in the middle of the road.”
Clairmont was booked into the Pinellas Jail and released the next day on bond.
