In Craig, Colorado, a mama deer was killed on Wednesday protecting her two fawns after attacking a woman who had been out walking her dog. Officers believed the 85-year-old woman surprised the doe.

According to the Denver Post, the woman had been walking her dog within city limits when the mother doe was surprised “leading to an unusually aggressive response.” Although doe attacks are rare, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife ordered the mother killed.

“In accordance with agency policy and due to the doe’s extremely aggressive behavior, CPW will put the animal down to protect public safety. The fawns will be taken to a local rehabilitation facility. The doe’s carcass will be taken to CPW’s Wildlife Health Lab for a full necropsy,” the organization wrote in their press release.

The woman was taken to Craig Hospital with serious injuries. There has been no update on the woman’s dog.

Craig is a town in the northwestern part of the state and has a large mule deer population.

Rest in peace poor mother deer. You were just doing what any mother would do to protect your babies. What a tragedy for everyone involved.
