A nine-year-old girl from Odessa, Florida was gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park in Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming. She was tossed into the air and injured on Tuesday afternoon near the Old Faithful Geyser.
According to KTVQ News, witnesses stated a group of about 50 people were within ten feet of the bison, for at least 20 minutes trying to pet the animal – prompting the animal to charge. Animals at Yellowstone are wild and unpredictable; officials at the park tell people to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards from all other animals including bison and elk.
In a news release from the National Park Service, the child was taken to the Old Faithful Lodge by her family where she was treated by emergency medical personnel and later taken and released from the Old Faithful Clinic.
A visitor to the park posted on Twitter what appeared to be a video of the incident. WARNING: The language used may be offensive and disturbing to some viewers. That tweet, posted by Hizzle My Nizzle, has since been deleted, however is available here.
“This is what happens when you f*** with wildlife and pay no mind to an animals personal space. This family was petting the buffalo before it charged. And as you can see the parents saved themselves over their daughter. I’m disgusted.”
The incident is now under investigation.
