An eight-year-old child fell into a panda enclosure at a breeding farm in the Sichuan province this past weekend. The little girl had apparently climbed over the railings and fell into the pen between the gaps in the barrier.

According to the South China Morning Post, the situation occurred at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Visitors watched in horror as a guard initially tried unsuccessfully to pull the child out of the enclosure. Three pandas approached the crying child, but seemed to just be curious and didn’t try to go into the ditch where the little girl landed. The guard  then hung upside down and was able to pull the child up to safety.

“The railings are quite high, so unless you climb over them it would be impossible to fall in,” a member of the breeding farm staff stated.

It is not known how the child climbed up onto the railing or if she was being supervised, but no one – including the pandas were harmed. Pandas are not generally aggressive, but can be protective if they think they are being threatened or if they are frightened.

The panda breeding facility is a popular tourist attraction.
