A bill, introduced by two Florida lawmakers, would make animal cruelty a federal felony. Animal cruelty and acts of abuse towards humans often go hand-in-hand, and new legislation, with stiffer penalties, will go a long way towards stopping those individuals who commit heinous acts of cruelty.

According to multiple sources, Rep. Vern Buchanan, R – Longboat Key, and Rep. Ted Deutsch, D – Boca Raton,  have introduced the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which could put convicted animal abusers behind bars up to seven years.

Buchanan is quoted in the Herald Tribune:

“Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act would make illegal the underlying acts leading to so-called “animal crush videos,” in which individuals brutally kill, mutilate and torture small and defenseless animals in videos that are shared through the internet. Congress passed legislation in 2010 to prohibit the creation and distribution of the videos, but the acts themselves are still legal under federal law.”

In a statement, he added:

“The torture of innocent animals is abhorrent and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Protecting animals from cruelty is a top priority for me and I look forward to working with Congressman Deutch on this important issue.”

  1. HURRAY!!! HURRAY!!! There ACTUALLY is a couple of the elected officials in The State of FLORIDA where abuse is So Very COMMON TAKING A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!!!

  2. Long overdue but a step in the right direction nonetheless. I’m glad to see that mindsets are changing, but my concern is that these laws will be only as good as the judges applying them and there seems to be quite a few judges who are idiots, who consider any sort of animal neglect or cruelty trivial.

Also, I’d like to see starvation and severe neglect which results in the death of an animal addressed as well.

But this is good!! Thank you.

  3. Well it’s about fucking time. And it’s nice to see a member from both parties involved in this. It’s a step in the right direction. I would like to see more prison time given to the criminals and in some cases execution but this is a start.
