A German shepherd who found himself homeless at a shelter after his owner died was rescued moments after being given sedation for euthanasia. The five-year-old dog was nearly a victim of space issues – it isn’t fair, but surrendered dogs are first in line to be put down when it becomes too crowded.
This particular dog managed to beat the odds which were stacked against him. On Monday, a woman with the rescue group that saved his life wrote:
Today our rescue pulled a German Shepherd from a local shelter. The dog was on the euthanasia list, because of space, and he had already been sedated, as step one of the euth process. His owner had died, and he had nowhere to go. He was one injection away from being killed, all because his owner died, and no one in his family wanted him. How damn unfair to this dog! His owner died, and people were going to kill him. 🤬😢
Another person with the rescue group recounted the dog’s situation:
We’ve pulled dogs off the table before but this has to be the closest reprieve we’ve ever had. He’s a beautiful dog, his owner died unexpectedly on 7/7 and his world has been turned upside down. He’s having a rough time right now but that’s to be expected after the sedation and everything else he’s been going thru. He was surrendered today and was to be euthanized today as well since he was an owner surrender and they are the first to die when overcrowding becomes an issue.
This dog is one of the lucky ones – many are not as fortunate. Today, instead of being discarded in a trash bag, this shepherd is in a foster home through the Heartland Small Animal Rescue. Learn more about this rescue group here.

It is absurd to me that a beautiful dog like this dies because his owner died and he has no home. The shelter can’t give the dog a few days to try to find a rescue or new owner? To have a dog turned in like this and immediately put on the euthanasia the same day is totally uncalled for! Sham on this shelter and shame on the family who would turn in a loved one’s pet and not care what happened to it. God bless the Heartland Small Animal Rescue for saving this boy!
That poor furbaby…… Absolutely disgusting……. How can someone do this and still like what they see in the mirror looking back at them??? Of course the relatives took everything that was of value in the house……
It’s absolutely heartbreaking how awful and callous some individuals can be to defenseless animals…… who were supposed to be treated as treasured family members……
I can’t understand how anyone would abandon a treasured senior family member……. How can anyone be so cruel to a loving family member when they are most in need of love and support??? Precious Treasure, your life matters, I am very sorry that you were failed so horribly by your human’s relatives……..
I would give anything to have had more time with our treasured MacKitty…… Our precious furbabies are family members and are with us forever (from adoption day to their last breaths of life)…….. Whilst I hate seeing senior treasures in a shelter (@ least they are in a place that is protected from predators, fed, watered, and hopefully rehomed), they have a chance for a new furever home, where they will be treasured family members…….
It is tragic to think of abandoned seniors dying in the shelter alone, afraid and worst of all unloved……

Thank heavens for a TRULY HAPPY ENDING! I also fail to understand the reasons for fast owner surrender euthanasia.
I do know that some shelters waste money on ridiculous things like fancy landscaping instead of using that money to save animals.
As far as the “kill” shelters go, I wonder how many donors realize they are donating so the shelter can kill MORE and MORE animals!
I also don’t understand why shelters can’t get grants to save more animals and then use the money wisely–not for elegant landscaping.
