A police K9 in Oregon was injured after running into a porcupine during the pursuit of a suspect on Saturday. Odin, with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office suffered excruciating pain after being struck in the face with hundreds of quills.

On the K9’s Facebook page, a photo was posted, along with a request for prayers for the injured dog:

Please, requesting prayers for Odin

Odin was rushed to a veterinary hospital for emergency care – his handler posted a word of gratitude on social media:

Thank you soooooooo much Hanson Meekins Animal Hospital for helping us on a Saturday night your the best!!!! Thank you everyone for the thoughts and prayers!!!!

His handler, Sgt. Adam Slater, updated worried Facebook followers with a promising update late Saturday night:

Thank you so very much for all the outpouring of love and support for my friend!!! I cannot say how much you all mean to us! Thank you very much to the staff at Hanson Meekins Animal Hospital for helping us out! We were worried his left eye may have been injured but now it looks like it should be ok. He is very sore, unhappy, and on meds but he is home. Thank you again from the Sheriffs Office Staff, Lisa and I. We love being part of this community! We will keep you updated as he heals!!

Slater explained how Odin came in contact with the porcupine:

We were on a criminal track for a suspect and were at about four miles when Odin basically ran into the porcupine in thick brush.

And more good news on Sunday:

Odin is feeling much better today!!! Although he looks kinda like Rocky! The pictures don’t do the swelling justice. Thanks again for all the well wishes for this fur man!!!! He has had an amazing life and story. Odin captures his 80th direct suspect the day prior and when this happened he was closing in on suspect capture 81. The man he was looking for had several felony warrants and had committed new crimes also. Odin is an amazing partner and I feel honored to be a part of his team every time his paws hit the ground.
