A jury has found the New Jersey man, who left a caged dog to die in a river, guilty of animal cruelty. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office issued a release about the jury’s findings against 35-year-old Aaron Davis on Thursday, reports NJ.com.

Davis put a young pit bull, dubbed River, into a black wire cage in late July 2018 and left him to die. The 10-month-old pup would have drowned if not for a good Samaritan who discovered him before the tide came in. Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni described the precarious situation River was left in:

“High tide would have been at 10:30, and this crate to house this small dog was probably two and a half feet off the ground. The water was rising through the crate and just in a matter of less than an hour, River wouldn’t have made it if it weren’t for Jennifer coming to take him out of the crate, saving his life.”

River has since been adopted from the Monmouth County SPCA.  At sentencing, Davis could face up to 18 months behind bars.
