A former Iraq veteran who served in the US Navy and found guilty of gouging out a neighbor’s dog’s eye  and torturing other dogs in Southern California was sentenced on Friday to nine years in prison.

According to the Patch, former Navy corpsman David Herbert, 37, was found guilty last summer of six counts of animal cruelty, one count of burglary and four misdemeanor counts of vandalism for harming two separate families’ dogs, one of which remains missing.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, in April 2017, Herbert went to the next door neighbor’s home of Maria Morales and tortured the family’s two Huskies; one dog lost her eye, but survived. The other dog  suffered acid burns both inside and outside of his body. The owners believed an intruder tried to force them out of their home. The family moved to another home, however the two dogs of the new tenants went missing one month later. One of their dog’s was found roaming the neighborhood. Police believe Herbert had injured or killed their other dog. Lala; the family’s nine-year-old golden retriever has never been found. That family also moved away.

Herbert apologized for his actions, and was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. His attorney told the judge his client suffers from “major depressive disorder.”

  1. Yes let’s use “major depressive disorder.” as an excuse for this behavior. I’m glad this POS will spend 9 years in prison, but most likely mostly for the burglary and vandalism counts, most judges don’t give a hoot what they do to our pets.
