Intoxicated driver alleged to have hit pole killing 3 horses

In Northwest Harris County, Texas, the driver of a trailer carrying three horses inside died after the vehicle crashed along Highway 249 on Thursday evening. Deputies believe the driver had been intoxicated.

According to Khou11News, deputies stated the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado had been towing the horse trailer when he slammed into a utility pole. The horses reportedly died on impact.

The driver, not yet identified, was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. Alcohol was found in the vehicle which reportedly had been moving at a high rate of speed.

“Investigators went to the hospital, found signs of impairment. He appeared to be intoxicated. Inside the Chevy, we did find at least one glass container containing alcohol, so we are investigating this as a DWI crash, if the driver survives,” stated Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Simon Cheng.

Police also intend to charge the driver with animal cruelty related to the deaths of the three horses.
