An Illinois mother and child were injured on Sunday after they were attacked by an exotic cat that had escaped from its home. The cat, identified as a Caracal, had been living in a nearby home as a pet.

According to CIProud, the cat had been walking through the neighborhood on the sidewalk when it attacked the child. The little girl’s mother was successful thwarting the attack and distracting the animal.

When animal control officers arrived, the cat lunged at them. Police shot the cat and killed it. Officials were able to locate the owner who now faces several violations. Although it is not illegal in Illinois to own exotic animals, some wild cats are prohibited including leopards, jaguars, bobcats, cheetahs et al.

Caracals are mainly found in Africa and northwest India; they weigh between 25 to 40 pounds. The mother and her daughter were not seriously injured. The cats prey on birds, rodents and small antelopes.

And another human error causes a wild animal to die. Rest in peace Caracal; indeed humans let you down.
