In the ultimate twist of fate, a 66-year-old hunter was killed by the deer that he thought he fatally wounded. As reported by ABC News, Thomas Alexander was gored to death by a deer that he shot on Tuesday near Yellville, Arkansas.

Alexander apparently shot the deer from a deer stand and left his gun by the stand as he walked over to ensure that the animal was dead. But the wounded animal managed to take out his wound-be killer in an unexpected attack, which has been called a “bizarre incident.”

The hunter, who was alone, was able to call his family for assistance, but he died at the hospital from his injuries. Oddly enough, the wounded deer was able to get away and has not yet been found by wildlife officials.

Keith Stephens, chief of communications with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, tells ABC News,

“It’s strange. Probably the only time it ever happened. We did have one in 2016 in southern Arkansas — but that hunter survived,”
