In Yellville, Arkansas a hunter was critically gored and died from antler punctures on Tuesday night. Thomas Alexander, 66, believed he had successfully shot a deer and had made plans with his nephew to field-dress the animal’s body.

When Alexander approached the deer, the animal was not dead and most likely had been stunned; the buck attacked and ran off.

According to AbcNews, the nephew found the man in the woods seriously injured. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission stated the man stopped breathing by the time paramedics arrived. It is not known if the antler wounds were the official cause of his death.

The victim was an experienced hunter. The injured buck has not been found.
