Humane officers with the Kennett, MO, animal services department were called out this week to investigate a report of two dead puppies inside of a cage. But the pups, badly neglected and sick, were still alive.

The heartbreaking situation as shared with followers of the Kennett Humane Dpt. Facebook page on Thursday:

Kennett Humane Department was dispatched to a house for what was believed to be two dead puppies in a crate. Upon arrival 2 puppies were located in the front yard in a small wire crate.

The pups locked in the cage were suffering from a variety of maladies, including dehydration, parasite and flea infestation, skin infection and burns on their skin from urine and feces.

The pups have been taken into the custody of the humane department and are receiving care from the Kennett Veterinary Clinic. Anyone hoping to help with the pups’ ongoing veterinary care can make a donation to:

According to the humane department, charges are pending against the puppies’ owner.
