Horse dies after suffering ‘catastrophic’ injury – death is 27th at race track

On Wednesday, a horse training on the beleaguered Santa Anita race track in Arcadia, California, suffered a “catastrophic” injury and had to be euthanized. The horse, River Derby, is the 27th horse to die at the Santa Anita Park track.

The two-year-old colt was galloping on the track when he suffered the devastating injury to his shoulder. Veterinarians determined that surgery was not an option and he was humanely euthanized on Thursday. Mike Willman, director of publicity at Santa Anita Park, commented on the tragic incident:

He did have three recorded works here at Santa Anita, and this was just an absolutely routine gallop here yesterday morning. The horse never went down, but he obviously went wrong.”

Kathy Guillermo, PETA’s senior vice president, issued a statement:

Derby River’s death today at only 2 years old is yet another reason why people want to see an end to racing, but the least that must be done right now is for tracks to put scanning equipment in place to detect pre-existing leg and shoulder injuries and for measures to be taken to ensure that young horses aren’t seriously injured before their bones are even mature.”
