In Glendale, Arizona, a homeless man was arrested on Monday evening after a police officer saw him throw a puppy “like a baseball” into the inside of a vehicle and close the door. Matthew Kassing, 25, faces animal cruelty charges.

According to AbcNews, the officer had been on an unrelated stop in a parking lot in the vicinity of Olive Avenue when he spotted the small puppy running around a vehicle with Kassing trying to catch it. The officer heard the two-pound, 10-week-old puppy cry out and  saw Kassing throw it.

When interviewed, Kassing stated he owned the dog and denied any wrong doing. The puppy was taken to a nearby animal hospital for evaluation and treatment.
