Here she is – the woman accused of leaving nearly two dozen horses to starve to death on rural property in Wake County, North Carolina. Investigators have identified 64-year-old Janet Elaine Laven Burleson as the person responsible for the death of one dog and 22 horses.
Tracking her down
An investigation was started immediately after the horrible discovery was made on property off of Fanny Brown Road. Testing revealed that all of the horses had died from starvation – as reported by ABC 11 News, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office was led to Burleson after tips came in from her own family, and other members of the public. Burleson allegedly abandoned the horses in small corrals months ago.
Burleson has not yet posted bond, but if she does, she will not be permitted to have animals. The horses, and deceased dog, were found on property which belonged to Amos and Jean Lavender, Burleson’s parents. Both are deceased.
One dog, in poor condition, managed to survive – that dog has been taken to the local animal shelter for care.
