Good Samaritans have rallied to help save a skeletal horse who was abandoned and left to die in Stanislaus County, California. The horse, dubbed River, was dumped near Laird Park, reports CBS Sacramento – the badly neglected and injured animal was discovered on Monday night by a father and son who were fishing in the area.

Cesar Garcia, who found the horse in the parking lot, stated:

We got close to the horse and he popped his head up started moving around trying to get up,” he added. ““He was really banged up. He had gashes on his face; gashes on his sides.”

Bobbie Carne, an animal rescuer in the area, is now heading up the effort to help keep River alive. On Tuesday, she wrote:

He’s gonna need a lot of help to try to recover. It takes a village and ya’ll are showing that village is alive, well and willing to save this abused baby. It’s been overwhelming to respond to questions and comments so I’m doing the best I can so bare with me…..Kevin Carne thank you for helping every time and standing next to me when things are hard to take.
Hoping and praying that river will keep fighting hard . He has a lot of love to give and deserves his shot at happiness. He truly is a fighter to endure what he’s gone through for so long. Thank you everyone for helping river survive ♡

River is being treated by veterinary staff with Taylor Veterinary Hospital in Turlock – it is believed that the emaciated horse will survive. Carne has stated that the veterinary hospital will not accept donations directly – donations can be made via PayPal to [email protected]

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

  1. I do NOT understand how anyone could be so cruel to a helpless animal…….

I hope this precious precious can recover and be rehomed into a loving furever family where he will be treated as a beloved family member!!!!!

The former owner has a reserved spot in Hell where they will burn forever for their cruelty…….
