A Florida German shepherd rescue agency is mourning the loss of one of its founders. On Tuesday, SHARE: Shepherd Help and Rescue Effort announced the death of Elissa Powers, a woman who had been battling cancer.

In a Facebook post, the non-profit agency stated:

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of SHARE’s original founders Elissa Powers after a long battle with cancer. Thanks to Elissa so many dogs got that second chance at life that they so desperately needed.

Elissa often pulled dogs seconds before they were euthanized. Elissa so often would pull dogs that no other rescue would even touch. We have no doubt that Elissa was met with a long line of furry friends at the rainbow bridge. RIP Elissa.

On a personal note, the writer of this article corresponded with Elissa for nearly a decade – she was a passionate voice for German shepherds, as well as a woman deeply devoted to her family. Shortly before her own diagnosis with cancer, she endured the extraordinarily painful loss of her beloved father.

Even as Elissa suffered through painful cancer treatments, she networked on behalf of German shepherds in need of help. Elissa had a big heart and she was taken far too soon. Condolences to her family, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rest in peace Elissa.

Imagine being in heaven with all the animals we so deeply loved and lost–plus all the other animals! Fly with the other angels, Elissa!

In a world where there aren’t enough of these angels it is sad to see we have lost one. My sincere condolences to her family and friends, I know how much she is and will be missed.
