A nine-month-old German shepherd puppy was discovered in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina motel room “near death” earlier this week.

According to WbtwNews, on Monday, Myrtle Beach Police Department officers executed a search warrant for a room at the Suburban Lodge. The puppy, appeared starved, diseased with open wounds and could not use his back legs. When found, the dog had been lying in a wire crate covered in his own urine and feces. No water was available.

“The dog was alert but suffering in a manner near death needing exigent veterinary care,” according to the warrant.

Christopher Wesley Sauber, 31, was located in the room the following morning, arrested and taken into custody. He has been charged with the ill treatment of animals.

The puppy was transported to the Murrells Inlet Veterinary Hospital and is being treated with intravenous fluids and small portions of food several times a day. It is not known if the puppy will regain the use of her back legs.

If found guilty of animal cruelty, Sauber faces up to five years in prison.
