A friendly dolphin, known for approaching boats to “beg,” was found dead from multiple stab wounds on Upper Captiva Island, Florida, and wildlife officials are hoping to find out who is responsible. As reported by ABC Action News, a necropsy revealed that the male bottlenose dolphin was alive when he was impaled in the head with a spear-like object.

NOAA was familiar with this particular dolphin, who was known for approaching boaters in a “begging” position. Experts with NOAA believe that the dolphin may have been attacked while begging based on the location of the wounds on his body.

NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement and their agency partners are offering a combined $38,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for this cruel crime. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to the NOAA Enforcement Hotline at 1-800-853-1964.
