A gruesome crime has claimed the lives of four lions in South Africa. According to multiple sources, the lions, dubbed the “pride of Tshwane,” were found mutilated at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve outside Pretoria.

The lions’ bodies, which were said to be missing their paws and jaws, were discovered on Friday morning – the killings are believed to have taken place at some point on Thursday night. According to IOL News, officials in the area believe that the lions were poisoned before being hacked up – their body parts possibly taken for “medicinal” purposes.

The authorities have vowed to investigate the criminal act. In a statement, Tshwane MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management Dana Wannenburg said, “This brutal act will not go unpunished and Tshwane Conservation officials, SAPS and national and provincial departments will work round the clock to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. ”
