A former Major League Baseball’s top draft pick was arrested in Kansas on Thursday after being accused of animal cruelty in the death of his 14-year-old dog.
According to PennLive, Shawn Abner, 53, will be extradited from Kansas to Pennsylvania and arraigned on aggravated animal cruelty, cruelty to animals, neglect of animals and tethering. Abner’s dog was discovered at his home decaying earlier this month.
It was on August 7 when his Husky named Eagle was found dead by a neighbor. Abner admitted no one had been caring for the dog, although he stated he left food and water for him and had not expected to stay in Kansas for an extended visit with his girlfriend.
Court documents stated Eagle had been left alone for more than a month. A necropsy reported the dog had been partially mummified. An officer described the heartbreaking scene in Abner’s apartment when Eagle’s body was discovered.
“…The corpse was decaying so badly that it was becoming part of the floor.”
On August 7, Abner posted a photo of Eagle on social media with the following comment under the dog’s photo.
“RIP Eagle. My best friend for 14 years! The Duo.”
If found guilty of all charges, Abner faces up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

Just read that his neighbors aid they havent seen or heard the dog since May – June. He didnt have anyone looking over him when he left, he stayed extra time, he had time to call someone to-try to get help. If he was unable to find someone to help then he should have left his gfs and went home to take care of his “best friend”. He knew was the outcome would be and stayed anyway!! F*** that
