A bill, making it illegal to pet your dog while driving, was introduced in the Florida Senate on Thursday.

The proposed legislation is a response to a recent AAA survey, contending that 52 percent of drivers admitted they have been distracted by their pets in their vehicles. The new law, however just doesn’t target pet owners; it’s intention is to include people using their mobile devices while driving as well as a few more common occurrences frequently associated with accidents.

Currently Florida drivers are not allowed to text while driving, and new proposals will also ban reading, writing and applying makeup. And in order to enforce the legislation, the bill would make distracted driving a primary offense, meaning a police officer could pull someone over if they see you petting your dog while behind the wheel.

Most pet owners disagree, contending if they are driving safely, why should anyone have a reason to pull someone over?

More discussion on the proposal is expected to begin in March when lawmakers return from recess.

  1. This may elicit some rude comments but I not only think this is a good thing but needs to be adopted by every state. Not only will it help prevent accidents but it will also help save the lives of pets. They fall out of windows when on driver laps but also get squished against steering wheels and windows.

  2. Ok – how the hell are these paragons of intellectual anorexia going to enforce this??? Install cameras in every vehicle??? I admit both things are distractions, but I think cell phones are a bigger distraction than petting your dog. Dogs should be restrained in cars to keep them safe. I have a car seat for my dogs.

  3. I wonder why more people are not alarmed by the Big Brother, Nanny State measures which have been steadily invading our lives and assaulting our personal autonomy. This is just another way to spy, invade, and, in the process, take our money and control us.

  4. big brother at work with our tax dollars. yes, leash your dog. also keep it out of your lap. of course I have a 102lb Dobe, so he is in the back seat. he sticks his head up to be petted when I am at a stop light, but then I tell him to get back when I start driving. so am I going to get a ticket at the light when my car isn’t moving, I think not! but someone will complain.

  5. No scratching your head either, or reaching across the seat to keep your purse from falling and spilling its contents. Both hands firmly on the wheel at ALL times or you’ll be caught and PAY. No head turning either, you can see all you need to see by using your mirrors, head turning takes your eyes off the road ahead. No more radio tuning either; that’s really distracting. There, we’re all set, everybody say “we love our nanny-state overseers!”
