On January 7, an otter reportedly bit a woman on her Achilles tendon as she walked her dog across a bridge in a Central Florida bridge at Lake Lily Park. The otter ran toward the woman and clamped down onto her leg.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Ann-Christine Langselius had been walking her Goldendoodle and said the attack was completely unprovoked.

“I didn’t disturb it or go near it,” Langselius stated. “It hung on for about 25 yards while I was running with it.”

Moments later the otter ran off. In another report, an otter injured another person about a half-mile away from the first attack. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a warning to avoid all contacts with otters. Warnings were posted along with a poster of an otter,

“CAUTION: Aggressive Otter Reported in Area.”

Otters attacking people are rare, but in this case, a citizen called complaining of a sick otter in his backyard. When authorities arrived, the animal was “seizing and shaking violently.” An officer shot the otter twice killing it.

Orange County Animal Services have since confirmed the otter tested positive for rabies, however it is not known if the otter that was killed is the same animal who attacked other residents. River otters have been documented as both having rabies and spreading the disease in the United States although there are very few documented cases. All warm-blooded animals can contract rabies if exposed.

  1. too many people in this world today. God said that the animals are to be submissive to us, He didn’t say, procreate yourselves until you destroy all other life on My planet.

  2. I never like to see wildlife gunned down like this but I have no clue as to how else they could have handled it. A rabbid otter is a danger to humans and pets and something needed to be done. I hope they get to the bottom of this and I hope they got the right otter.
