On Saturday morning, a Fort Walton Beach police officer had an encounter of a different kind. Sometimes even the smallest residents need help from our brave men.

“So I’m driving down the road windows down enjoying some cool weather and BOOM something smacks my door jam, and goes flyin’ out my passenger window.

Bruh when I tell you was so shook I thought someone threw something at my SUV,” Officer Monty Wayne wrote on his Facebook page earlier in the day.

And so Officer Wayne turned his vehicle around to investigate what could have struck his SUV.

“I turn around and go back and this woodpecker is sitting on the ground clearly dazed possibly concussed lol,” the officer continued.

Moments later, the big-hearted police officer stated the bird actually let him pick him up, and after a few minutes was able to fly off on his own.

“Damn bird scared the hell outta me lol,” Wayne wrote.

Years ago, this same officer rescued and subsequently adopted a pit bull puppy from a dangerous situation. Later in this morning, the officer also carried an injured dog to PAWS. Here’s hoping the dog recovers.

Heroes are everywhere.
