In Bloomington, Illinois, a flamingo had to be euthanized after an elementary school student threw a rock into the exhibit and broke the flamingo’s leg.

According to the Pantagraph, a representative from the Miller Park Zoo, the child skipped the rock into the flamingo’s habitat and injured the bird by accident. The zoo is working with the student’s parents to make the “unfortunate accident” a learning experience.

Miller Park Zoo Superintendent Jay Tetzloff stated the zoo had no choice but to put the bird down.

“Unfortunately, staff determined the best course of action given the animal’s injuries was to euthanize the bird.”

The zoo had 25 flamingos prior to this accident. Their habitat is located near the zoo’s entrance making the birds the unofficial greeters as guests enter.

Rest in peace innocent one. We are sorry humans let you down.

  1. IT IS “NO” ACCIDENT WHEN A CHILD IS THROWiNG ROCKS INTO AN ANIMAL’S HABITAT! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PARENTS???

THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM IN HELL FOR KIDS (AND PARENTS) WHO
KILL INNOCENTS BY THIS KIND OF “ACCIDENT”!

  2. Where were this kid’s parents when he did this? An elementary school student; was this a school related event? If so, where were the school personnel who were supposed to be supervising these kids? This kid is nothing but a brat and should face consequences that fit the “crime” (let’s call it what it really is). The parents should be required to take full responsibility for this kid’s actions and face a stiff fine at a minimum. As for him, maybe 6 months community service cleaning cages and sweeping the sidewalks at the zoo might be just the “learning experience” he needs.

  3. I agree with the other comments.
    1. NOT an accident: “normal people” do NOT throw rocks at birds……
    2. where were this monster’s parents or school chaperones whilst the rock throwing took place?
    3. someone might argue that the individual who did this isn’t “normal”…… BFD!!! All “not normal” means is that individual requires MORE supervision……
    4. there should be harsh consequences for this monster causing the death of an innocent bird……
    5. this bird’s unnecessary death should lead to an “example” punishment so that no one else tries to replicate this behavior (or do something even worse)…….
