An 83-year-old grandfather and his 14 dogs died in a blaze which was sparked by Fourth of July fireworks in Visalia, California. As reported by Visalia Times Delta, illegal fireworks landed in a tree near Raymond Fierro’s home, and then his house, on the 1100 block of Stover Street, caught fire.

Reece Newsome, who was celebrating nearby with friends and family, told the news agency,

“We noticed the tree on fire and ran over to help. It only took about two minutes for the whole tree to burn up. You could see the ash and feel the heat from blocks away.”

The blaze engulfed Fierro’s home and threatened nearby homes. Responding firefighters were able to prevent the flames from burning down other homes, but the 83-year-old man’s residence was consumed.

Neighbors worried that Fierro and his 14 Chihuahuas were inside of the home when the fire broke out and their fears were realized. Lupe Flores, who lived nearby, told the news agency:

“(Fierro) was a quiet man who kept to himself. Not someone you see outside, so we all feared the worst when the house caught fire It happened so quickly. There’s no way he had time to escape.”

  1. How horrible. Illegal fireworks cause so much damages and are heartbreaking for the affected families (my ex lost his house to illegal fireworks).

Condolences to Mr. Fierro’s family for his loss and the loss of their 14 precious Chihuahuas……… totally unnecessary and absolutely heartbreaking…….. Your lives mattered. You did NOT deserve to be murdered as entertainment for POSs……. I hope the POSs who started the fire are found, prosecuted and serve prison time…..

I wish the laws against selling these illegal fireworks would be enforced more strictly…..

Mr. Fierro, I know you and your precious Chihuahuas are all in Heaven. Please look for MacKitty and my Dad. You can all RIP amongst caring and loving friends…….

  2. This is the reason you don’t shoot off fire works in neighborhoods. I sat here 4th of July with my neighbors shooting them off hoping a spark wouldn’t fall on my house and start it on fire. Prayers for that poor man and his precious fur babies. Someone should be arrested for this! Condolences to his family and friends!

  3. As long as people act like “careless, brainless, heartless” children, this will continue–these children of ALL ages NEED TO GROW UP! This was JUST PLAIN MURDER!
