In Conway, Arkansas a deputy has been fired after a video showed him shooting a small dog during a call for service. The incident occurred on January 4 and involved  Faulkner County Deputy Kennan Wallace.

According to APNews, the video, posted on the resident’s Facebook page, has gone viral and has been shared thousands of times since Saturday afternoon. Doug Canady, who posted the video, stated he has been with the little dog named Reese for three years and rescued him  as a “skinny little ‘malnutritioned’ dog.”

On Friday afternoon, a woman had been standing in the road in front of Canady’s home pointing a gun at the dog and in the direction of the owner’s home. He told the woman to put away the gun at which time she called the police. Canady went to a service station nearby, and when he returned a sheriff’s vehicle was in front of his house. The deputy approached and Canady then began to video the interaction.

Two small dogs ran out near the deputy’s feet – barking and wagging their tails. The deputy asked Canady to come to the road and speak with him, but when Canady refused, the deputy approached and a shot is heard. As the camera pans in on the deputy, a small dog can be seen on the ground writhing in pain.

“Are you f—–g kidding me?” Canady shouts. “You’re f—–g kidding me.”

“I told you,” the deputy responded.”

Canady rushed Reese to an animal hospital where the dog is listed in stable condition. His jaw was shattered, but he is expected to recover.

On Saturday, Sheriff Tim Ryals relieved Deputy Keenan Wallace of his duties at the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office. A statement released on the organization’s Facebook page provided additional information:

“Good Evening,

Since taking office in 2017, I have been an advocate of integrity, professionalism and transparency. I hold my Deputies to the highest of standards to protect and serve the residents of our community. Unfortunately, a Deputy fell short to those standards.
I was notified Friday of an incident involving Deputy Keenan Wallace. Deputy Wallace fired his service weapon that injured an animal while in close proximity to a citizen. I believe there were numerous opportunities to de-escalate the incident.
Over the last 24 hours, at my request, Faulkner County Investigators have been working diligently to investigate whether Deputy Wallace violated any state law or our agency’s policies and procedures. While it appears no policies or laws were violated, I hold every employee within our agency to the highest of standards and will be forwarding the investigation to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for further review.
As a result of the incident that occurred on January 4, 2019, in the Shiloh Estates Subdivision, Deputy Keenan Wallace has been relieved of his duties at the Faulkner County Sheriff’ Office.
We in Law Enforcement answer calls every day that require split second life and death decisions. We strive to be right 100 percent of the time.
Our Department is sadden about this incident and apologize for any distress and disappointment this incident has caused anyone who was affected by this disheartening event. We will keep Reeses in our thoughts through the recovery process.

Sincerely,

  1. He needs to be fired, never allowed to have a gun and charged with animal cruelty. If he’s shooting what looks like a 6 pound dog whose wagging its tail for no reason he’s not fit to be a cop or protect anyone or anything. If he wants to state he was in fear of a 6 lbs dog he shouldn’t be a cop go get a job as a librarian. He needs to pay for all vet bills for that dog or I would sue the town for hiring a pussy.

  2. To make the comment, “I told you so”, indicates spite, malice or both. The fuckin cop felt the need to get even????? You don’t need a cop on the force with that kind of mentality. The fuckin asshole should be fired.

  3. Yes, the owner should have immediately listened to the deputy and done what was asked of him,BUT,the deputy should not have shot at that dog, especially with others around. Dog presented no threat to the stupid trigger happy deputy, but he shot anyway.

  4. I COMMEND the Sheriff of this DEPARTMENT and HIS EXPECTATION’s for his ENTIRE DEPARTMENT!!! This Putrid Rogue COP NEEDS NEVER TO WORK IN LAE ENFORCEMENT AGAIN!!!!

  5. Finally a law enforcement officer held accountable for the senseless shooting of an innocent animal. No excuse whatsoever. Deputy Wallace not only abused his power as a law enforcement officer but thoroughly demonstrated that he is nothing more than a bully and a coward. Highest commendation to the sheriff who took appropriate and immediate action.
