A senior dog was recently surrendered to a busy New York City animal control agency, and now he is on the list of dogs to be killed. The eight-year-old pit bull, named Boots, lost his home because his owner did not have time for him.

Boots is fearful at the Manhattan Animal Care Center – he is unsure of his surroundings, and all of the strangers who have suddenly been put into his life. The Facebook page, Must Love Dogs NYC writes:

Boots is a eight year old hunk whose family turned their backs on him when he needed them most. Its cold outside, the dog pound is no place for a eight year old pooch and most of all, its Christmas! How could they?! Boots is sad and lonely without his family but he’s a resilient pooch like oh so many others and he’s ready and willing to start from the bottom in an awesome new home and work his way all the way back up to the top because he’s cool like that. Boots is good looking, he’s got that grey thing goin’ on, he’s housetrained and he already lived in harmony with a bunch of kids. Boots is trying to be home for the holidays so please start sharing him ASAP for that second chance he so desperately needs.

When Boots was assessed for resource guarding at the facility, he ignored the fake hand and instead, rubbed his head on the counselor’s legs. Though Boots is said to have some fear of strangers, he did not react to the people who passed him by when he was being taken in at the animal control agency.

According to Boots’ former owner, there was a bite incident in the dog’s past – someone was in a fight outside of Boots’ home and when that person entered his residence, Boots bit the person on the butt (not breaking the skin, but causing bruising). Boots apparently retreated after biting the stranger on the butt. Boots’ former owner has stated that Boots barks at people who enter the home.

Because of the owner’s concerns about Boots reactivity to strangers, the animal control agency requires that he be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home.
