The Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) has just backed off reauthorizing the controversial use of “cyanide bombs” to kill wildlife in order to protect farmers and ranchers stock.

One week ago, the EPA authorized the use of the deadly traps, however on Thursday, the agency announced the use of the devices has been suspended. Public outrage has been credited with the reversal after the sodium cyanide canister traps are aimed at killing foxes, bears, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions, birds and other wild animals. Scientists contend the use of the traps also contaminates the environment and poses a deadly threat to domestic pets and humans.

The spring loaded device sprays the deadly sodium cyanide into the mouths of the animals and can easily be triggered by any animal, child or adult that touches it.

“I am announcing a withdrawal of EPA’s interim registration review decision on sodium cyanide, the compound used in M-44 devices to control predators. This issue warrants further analysis and additional discussion by EPA,” state EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler.

In the past, a cyanide bomb, set out by the Department of Agriculture killed a Pocatello, Idaho, family dog. The device labeled as a “predator control” killed the three-year-old Labrador retriever and sickened a 14-year-old child. The dog died a violent death in front of the teen. His family is now suing the USDA’s Wildlife Services.

  1. I remember a while back a boy and his dog ran into one of these and I think the dog got killed and the boy was sickened! These should not be used near where people live and I find this a inhumane way of killing wildlife anyway. I can very well understand the outrage!
