In Pilesgrove, New Jersey, an emaciated dog survived by eating the bones of another deceased dog just to survive. Ruth had been left in a vacant home with no food or water. No one knows how long she had been left alone.

According to the Salem County Humane Society, the four-year-old dog had been deserted with another dog. A Good Samaritan heard Ruth barking and contacted the animal shelter. When found, the dog only weighed 29 pounds and tested positive for Lyme Disease.

“In case you haven’t heard, we recently took on a heartbreaking case. You see, Ruth was found in an abandoned house with no food or water. For survival, she was feeding on an already deceased dog also found in the house. One of our volunteers offered to foster her while she gains weight and strength and builds trust. Sadly, Ruth, who we think is a boxer/beagle mix, weighs only 29 pounds and is estimated to be 4-5 years old. She tested positive for lymes disease and has a long road to recovery ahead of her before she can even receive her vaccinations and be spayed. The situation is in the prosecutor’s hands for an investigation. We will keep you updated with her progress.

And now two weeks later, Ruth’s owner, Heather Thistlewood, 27, faces animal cruelty charges. According to NJ.Com, Ruth has gained six pounds, and the Boxer/Beagle mix is doing better and will be available for adoption in a few months.

Although Ruth seems to be wary of men, the dog is sweet and will make someone a great companion.
