Eleven dogs who tested positive for distemper, a highly contagious disease, have been adopted from an Arizona animal shelter. As reported by ABC 15 News, the dogs were adopted from Maricopa County’s East facility. The adopters knew that the dogs had tested positive for the deadly disease before they took them home.

Jose Santiago, a shelter spokesperson, explained why the dogs needed to leave the animal shelter  – he told the news agency, “They were going to keep spreading the virus, there was the potential to infect even more dogs.”

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control just lifted a month long quarantine at the facility – dozens of dogs who had contracted the viral disease were euthanized since the start of the outbreak. Santiago explained why the 11 distemper positive dogs were allowed to leave the shelter, “The dogs are expected to do well and live healthy lives, and that is why we decided it was OK to adopt them out.”

Individuals who brought home distemper positive dogs will be providing them with medication and treatment – they are also advised to keep them away from other dogs until they are clear of the disease.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs with distemper will first present with a pus-like discharge from their eyes. They will then develop fever, nasal discharge, coughing and a reduced appetite. Left untreated, the infectious disease will attack the nervous system, causing dogs to twitch, convulse, tilt their head, circle and possibly become paralyzed.

Keep your own pet safe from this contagious, sometimes fatal, disease by ensuring that vaccinations are administered and kept up to day.
