In a viral video, an elephant herd had a funeral procession for a baby elephant as they wept and mourned the death of the newborn calf. The video, posted on Twitter by Indian Forest Services officer, Parveen Kaswan on Friday, was heartbreaking.

In the video, one of the elephants carries the lifeless baby with her trunk as the rest of the herd follow and mourns the calf’s death. The elephant seemed to have been waiting for the rest of the herd and as they all catch up, the funeral continues.

Kaswan captioned the video:

“This will move you !! Funeral procession of the weeping elephants carrying dead body of the child elephant. The family just don’t want to leave the baby.”

The video has had more than 151, 000 views with social media reactions so heart rendering surely humans can learn from their compassion towards each other. Although scientists have not agreed that elephants can display “grief” in the way humans do, it has been noted, however that elephants do seem to mourn the deaths of herd members.

Rest in peace little one.

  1. No surprise that elephants have deep feelings! Do we know what happened to the baby? Probably a human had something to do with it!
