An elderly woman, inside of a car which was stuck on train tracks in Leetonia, Ohio, was killed on Monday morning when a freight train struck her vehicle. As reported by WFMJ News, 89-year-old Sally Davies of Greenville, Pennsylvania, has been identified as the driver killed by the train’s impact.
The woman’s husband, 92-year-old Ronald Davies, was able to get out with the help of a police officer who was at the scene attempting to save the couple. The officer was able to get Ronald out of the vehicle before the train hit – the man suffered lacerations and cracked ribs as he was extracted from the vehicle.
Leetonia Police Chief Alan Haueter stated that Sally Davies did not want to get out of her car because her dog was still inside. The small dog survived the train’s impact and has been taken to the Columbiana County Dog Pound.
WBKN News reports that officials are trying to determine why the Pennsylvania residents were in Leetonia so early in the morning. The officer who was trying to save the couple is taking a day off for grief counseling.
