Days ago, two elderly horses were abandoned in a trailer which was left in the parking lot of a Windsor, California, Home Depot store. As reported by ABC 7 News, the two horses may have been inside of the sweltering hot trailer for more than 24 hours.

Kevin Davis, Field Supervisor for Sonoma County Animal Services, commented on the baffling cruelty case:

We have no idea why someone would show up in our county and dump a trailer with horses.

The horses, both mares, are believed to be over 20 years of age, and both are underweight. The animal welfare agency received a tip in the cruelty case, stating:

While on scene, a passerby reported they remembered seeing an old (early 1990’s), beat-up, maroon/burgundy Ford pick-up truck, parking this trailer at this location, at approximately 1:00 PM yesterday (7/22/19). Yes, that means there is high a possibility these two horses were cooped up in that trailer for over 18 hours, without food or water. Not to mention how dangerous it is to have two horses, inside a trailer NOT connected to a tow vehicle.

The Windsor Police Department released additional information about the abandoned horses:

The lighter colored dun (grulla) horse has an old, healed injury to her back right leg. The darker colored bay horse is a Mustang, and had a distinct BLM brand on the left side of her neck. Both horses were taken to an undisclosed ranch where they will be cared for properly.

If anyone has any information regarding these two horses, please contact Sonoma County Animal Control @ (707) 565-7100 and reference Activity #:104341.

I am very glad that these horses were saved. They must have been absolutely terrified being abandoned……. I hope they are rehomed where they can be purely companions, or therapy horses……
