In West Odessa, Texas, a photo and short video of a dog being dragged on Wednesday morning on I-20 quickly went viral on social media. It showed a Kent Companies employee driving a truck, dragging a dog behind it.

According to NewsWest9, the dog is the driver’s family pet and the pup accidentally became entangled onto the trailer hitch. The owner of the dog didn’t know if his dog jumped out of the bed of the truck or if his leash wrapped around the hitch while playing. A passing motorist flagged the driver down; the dog’s owner has been described as devastated.

On the website of Kent Companies, a statement about the tragic accident has been posted:

“Unfortunately, this morning we encountered a sad accident with one of our Team Members and their family dog. We are sick over the events that happened this morning and are deeply saddened for this Team Member, his family and the animal. We regret that we were not able to personally address every phone call or social media inquiry; however, our day has been filled with gathering information on what happened. Thank you for understanding during this difficult time and our need to focus on getting the facts and comforting our team member and his family.”

Dogs who ride in the bed of trucks are not safe. The American Veterinary Medical Association states un-caged dogs are at risk of serious injuries. Estimates of more than 100,000 dogs annually are fatally injured as a result of jumping or falling from a pickup truck’s cargo area.

Rest in peace pup. This didn’t need to happen.
