Hurricane Dorian, the massive, slow-moving storm which pummeled the Bahamas, also killed dozens of wild horses in North Carolina. According to herd manager Woody Hancock, 28 wild horses were swept away when the storm surge pushed into Pamlico Sound.

As reported by the Charlotte Observer, the horses were part of a herd on Cedar Island. Of the 49 horses making up the herd, 28 are believed to be dead; some of their bodies have been washing to shore and others will likely never be found after being swept out to sea.

Hancock noted that horses are typically able to move to higher ground to avoid danger, but a so-called “mini tsunami” approached so fast that they were caught off guard.
